Sept. 26 - NYC - BC/EFA 2010 Flea Market

The 2010 Broadway Flea Market And Grand Auction is only one month away. The event, which benefits Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS, will be held on Sunday, September 26th from 10:00 a.m.-7:00 p.m. at Shubert Alley and 44th St.

Last Year's event raised almost half a million dollars and our table raised almost $1900.

Your SMA/BCEFA Flea Market Committee is asking for your help. We are seeking volunteers and show biz memorabilia including: posters, t-shirts, recordings and show jackets, small household items, jewelry, general CDs and cassettes, theatrical books (please no other topics) and magazines.

Please take the time to see if you have a few items for this important cause. If you are currently stage managing shows please get your cast to donate a signed program, poster, or other swag!

Items can be brought to the table the morning of the flea market, between 8:30-9:00 a.m. Please be sure that your donations are of the best quality, not too large, and priced if at all possible. If you need to drop off donations prior to Sunday morning, please call me directly at 914-489-2439 or email turbomoon@earthlink.net and we will make arrangements with you.

In addition to donations, we will need the following help running the table:

Set-up- 8:30 a.m.
Running the table-
3 hour shifts between 10 a.m. and 7 p.m.
Tear down- 6-8 p.m.

Sept. 12 - NYC - Going Below 14th Street

Come join us for a casual gathering of stage managers in Manhattan on Sunday, Sept. 12 at Phebes, starting at 8pm. Feel free to bring your stage manager friends - they do not need to be members to join in. Details and directions are below. We hope to see you there!

From East Side
Head south on 2nd Avenue to East 3rd Street and turn right. Head one block west on East 3rd Street to Bowery and then right on Bowery to corner of East 4th Street and Bowery. Phebe's is on the southeast corner.

From West Side
Head east on 14th Street to 2nd Avenue. Turn right on 2nd Avenue heading south and right on East 3rd Street. Head one block west on East 3rd Street to Bowery and then right on Bowery to corner of East 4th St and Bowery. Phebe's is on the southeast corner of East 4th Street and Bowery.

From Downtown
Take Canal Street to Centre Street and head north. After Centre Street becomes Lafayette Street, turn right on East 4th Street. Head one block east to Bowery. Phebe's is on the the southeast corner of East 4th Street and Bowery.

From George Washington or Brooklyn Bridges
Follow FDR Drive south to the Houston Street Exit. Take Houston Street West to Lafayette Street. Turn right on Lafayette Street and make another right on East 4th Street. Head one block east to Bowery. Phebe's is on the southeast corner of East 4th Street and Bowery.

Sept. 10-12 - Denver Camping Trip

The Denver Stage Managers' first-ever camping trip is ON for this weekend!

The quick facts:
WHERE: The South Fork of the South Platte River - approx 1 hr 15 min southwest of Denver
WHEN: Overnight options Friday-Sunday. Daytrip options Saturday or Sunday
WHO: Any Denver stage managers and family. As it's in a National Forest, dogs on leashes are also welcome
COST: Campsite costs vary depending on how many campsites we need and vehicles we have...The SMA will contribute one campsite for Friday and Saturday night. Plan on each vehicle contributing at least another $5 per day, whether staying overnight or for day use (see below for details).
ADDITIONAL COST/FEE: If at all possible, please also print off a couple spare copies of some of your stage management paperwork or script samples to share for an actual bit of networking and brainstorming! "Bad" samples from either your early career or other stage-managers-to-remain-nameless are also welcome for discussion!

As we can't reserve campsites, some of us will go out as early as possible on Friday afternoon to secure spots for everyone. There is also no cell phone reception, so we'll rely on the blue and white pinwheel again, as well as leaving notes on the campground entrance signs.

DAY-TRIPPERS: Last weekend there were many people floating the river in innertubes. You are highly encouraged to bring one and join in for a nice float. We will also be bringing 2 inflatable kayaks - we will have to find the deeper water for these, but there looked like potential spots for this for up to a mile. If you plan to join us for daytripping, stop by Ouzel Campground (see campground map and Google map directions) and we'll try to have a note tacked on the board giving approximate directions for our floats and campsite. If you also own lifejackets and/or canoe or kayak paddles, bring those too. There were many people fishing last weekend if that's your thing, too. Please plan on a $5 use fee for your vehicle, though you may not need it. Last minute folks welcome, but an RSVP (to Erin Joy Swank, 937-308-0366 or email available in Member Contact Sheet) is appreciated since communication will be lacking once there. There are port-a-potties on site, FYI, but pack out your own trash.

CAMPERS: Please contact Erin with your interest and we can get more into logistics for number of spaces needed/camping gear/food options, etc, rather than going into too many specifics here. Looking at Osprey or Ouzel Campgrounds, depending on space availability, followed by South Platte Campground further south on the same road. FYI, additional campsites if we need them are either $11 or $14 (for 2 vehicles) - please bring cash in smaller denominations or check!

Aug. 21 & 22 - Denver

This Saturday, August 21st, we will be meeting at Washington Park at noon for a summer picnic gathering. The Stage Managers' Association will provide the makings for chicken salad sandwiches. Please bring your own beverage and something (like chips, fruit or dessert) to share. RSVP by email or local Evite to Erin Joy Swank, but last-minute arrivals are okay too. (Members can find Erin's information in the Member Contact Sheet on the SMA website and obtain specific directions for within the park.)

Additionally, this Sunday, August 22nd, Erin will be headed to Water World (water park with lots of water rides http://www.waterworldcolorado.com / at 88th & Pecos) and any stage managers are welcome to join. It's a blast! Temperatures are forecast to be pretty hot (low 90s) & slim chance of rain. It's a fun way to stay cool. If you'd like to join, Erin will be in line at 9:45 am (try the 4th line from the left) & she plans on claiming an area down by Thunder Bay (big wave pool) on the right side in a grassy area where there are a couple of trees. Bring a lunch or buy at their concessions (they only allow factory sealed nonglass bottles in the park). Lockers are available for a couple of quarters. Cost is $35 (less for Westminster residents) and you can get a $5-6 discount coupon on their website, Pepsi/Mt. Dew cans, or through Wendy's. Hope you can join for a lot of laughs & screams! Let Erin know if she should be looking for you or if you want to go in on a Family 4-Pack deal through King Soopers, which also includes food at the park.

June 28 - "Founders' Night" in NYC

On June 28, 2010 about 20 stage managers gathered together at Gossip in New York City. We celebrated Patricia Sutherland-Cohen and Janet Friedman's birthdays, along with visits from Bill McComb and David Grindle. The SMA closed down the bar, so that dispels the rumor that stage managers don't know how to have fun.

Bill McComb entertained Katrina Herrmann and Rachel Cappy. He was demonstrating his spiel as a tour guide for a Florida jailhouse.
